Bali: Canggu Edition

If you happen to be part of the small minority that aren't so familiar with Bali, I'll provide some insight on this spectacular, social-media infused Island. Bali is one of the 18,000 islands within the Indonesian archipelago located in Southeast Asia, known for its breathtaking landscapes, iridescent waters, surfing community, and overall lifestyle. Although there is an enormous amount of areas and little cities to visit in Bali to last nearly a lifetime, one place in particular sets the scene for any traveler looking for the typical "Bali Vibe", the one and only Canggu. Whether you're in the mood for surf and waves, amazing cuisine, trendy shops, temples, people-watching, etc...Canggu is a must-stay.

I was lucky enough to have spent nearly two months traveling around Bali and I can say with sincerity that Canggu was the ideal hotspot and base, especially for someone interested in venturing off to other cities or islands. Hostels close to Batu Bolong are primarily where you'll find fellow Millennials traveling around Bali, however, if you prefer a more private, serene environment, there's a pretty broad selection of stunning villas to choose by. Also, a suggestion when staying in Canggu is to rent a scooter being that the coast of beaches extend quite some Km/Miles and driving a car isn't so preferable considering the insane traffic throughout the day.

If you are going to reside in Canggu for some time you might as well give surfing a shot, whether you are a beginner, a rookie, or a surfing GOD, you can never go wrong with Old Man's. This restaurant/bar/surf spot is where everyone (even locals) flock to throughout the scorching-hot Bali afternoons. Old Man's has much to offer any beach bum visitor, conveniently located atop Batu Bolong Beach.

Batu Bolong

You can't go to Canggu without trying one of their colorfully assorted, Instagram worthy, fruit bowls with exotic ingredients to wake up those taste buds!

1. Betelnut Cafe

One of my favorite places is Betelnut Cafe, only 5 minutes from Batu Bolong, this cafe has a nice selection of breakfast and lunch options to choose from, tons of delicious desserts, and is reasonably priced.

2. The Loft

Trendy, hip, and exuberating pure minimalism, the Loft is THE place for a diverse menu selection, where you can have a pink latte, avocado toast, coconut infused smoothie, etc. Also located a few minutes from Batu Bolong.

3. Kynd Community

The first and only place I have been able to encounter someone cutting mango to form a name or word! You're able to customize your own fruit bowl with Mango's that are shaped to form any word you like.

Canggu isn't quite the club rat, bottle service type of environment, however they do have lounges along the beach starting from Echo Beach to Batu Bolong that are definitely worth a visit.

1. La Brisa

With almost a Pirates of the Caribbean meets LA beach resort vibe, this place is the top on my list. Every Saturday they host the best DJ's and throughout the week this beautiful lounge is open from 7am to 11pm. Located a little north of Batu Bolong, atop Echo Beach.

2. Pretty Poison

This is literally a skate board park/bar, where dozens of people gather around to watch, drink, and dance whilst skateboarders please the crowd with wild tricks. This location holds different events depending on the week, mainly on Thursdays, probably the most unique of all bars in Canggu.

3. Old Man's

As I said before, Old Man's is a classic go-to for morning or night, every evening they hold a decent crowd, mixed amongst the locals and the visitors. Music varies from hip-hop, R&B, electronic, you name it they have it! Located along the beach provides immediate access to the "Sand Bars" below Old Mans.

To conclude this snippet of Canggu's to-do's/must-see's/must-eat's...(the list can go on and on) I must state that there is no greater place to watch sunset or surf consistent, steady waves...than in Canggu (as a matter of fact, Bali in general). Tune in for my next post!
